Who should come?
This pilgrimage is open to anyone able to walk the 25 kilometres from St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, to St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.
|
What will it cost?
There is no fee, but any donations to help defray costs will be gratefully acknowledged.
What should I bring?
- Clothing:
Be sure to use old comfortable and well broken-in walking shoes. New shoes are guaranteed blisters! July nights can be quite cold, so coat, hat and gloves are recommended. As rain is possible, bring either a weatherproof coat or a rain cape. If rain is heavy, waterproof shoes will be a bonus. A small light backpack is useful for carrying your snacks and bottled water, tissues, a few band-aids for possible blisters etc. Useful extras are flashlights (torches), a walking stick, and reflective armband for pedestrians.
- Food:
Bring sandwiches or similar food for at least one meal. Don’t forget drinks. There are petrol stations along the route where you can buy food, but it is uncertain how long stocks will last when a large group arrives. Moreover, queuing up to buy food will take time and leave you little opportunity for resting.
Schedule
9:30 pm 13 July Holy Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, followed by the blessing of the pilgrims and departure from St Patrick’s Cathedral.
6:00-7:00 am 14 July arrival at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, and Benediction.
The route
- From St Patrick’s take Victoria Road all the way to ANZAC Bridge.
- At the end of ANZAC Bridge follow the pedestrian/cycle ramp down onto Quarry Master Dr.
- On Quarry Master do NOT go under the motorway, but in the opposite direction along Quarry Master, and almost immediately you’ll see Saunders Street on your right.
- Turn right into Saunders and follow it to the T-junction with Miller St.
- Go left on Miller, which becomes Union.
- Continue straight on (passing Paternoster Row) towards Pyrmont Bridge.
- Carry on across Pyrmont Bridge (over Darling Harbour).
- At the end of Pyrmont Bridge get Market Street.
- Follow Market Street east to Hyde Park, which is entered adjacent to the Archibald Fountain.
There is a pedestrian footpath the whole way, but we will need to cross Victoria Road from time to time.
Safety
While traffic is much lighter during the night caution is necessary at all times. We will use the pedestrian footpath at all times. Crossing Victoria Road will only be done at pedestrian crossings with lights. There will be marshals to guide us and pilgrims are requested to obey all instructions – which are for your safety and comfort.
