The clothes we wear
Clothes. Fashion. Appearance. Why these should be of concern to a Christian
8 SEPTEMBER 2007

by Mr. Paul Folley

THERE were saints who neglected their appearance – especially their clothes – to avoid becoming vain and worldly. But there were also saints who said neglecting our clothes is a sign of disrespect for God. Which is right? What bearing do the clothes we wear have on our sanctification?

With today's fashions becoming ever more immoral and tasteless, we may feel justified in throwing in the towel with all things to do with clothing. However, we may be losing a great opportunity to enrich our lives with beauty, to edify our neighbour and to give glory to God.

Clothes pervade our whole lives and influence everything we do. Yet clothing is a much-neglected subject amongst Catholics. It is high time we took the offensive in the world of fashion and utilised this excellent means of evangelisation.
